Part 4: Retail Holiday Prep: Planning your Marketing!

What is the key to making your Holiday Season a success? Marketing. Everything we do as small business owners revolves around marketing.


You have your plan and made adjustments based on item availability from your vendors. Now you need to plan out how you are going to market the items. The key to a successful season is a marketing plan.

The Planner breaks down your marketing into manageable pieces. What are your goals, how are you going to measure to know you have achieved your goals, and planning out each month with a theme in mind. My favorite aspect is the how they work in analytics into the process.


Here's how this can benefit your Holiday Season. Think about the products you are bringing into the store, physical location and online. Can you group any of them together? Think about the advertising you see for big retailers. Early to Mid-November they are advertising Holiday specials and Black Friday Deals. Can you do something similar?


I do not advocate for paid advertising, unless you know EXACTLY who your target market is and how to reach them. What I am recommending you do is plan out your social media posts. Facebook Business page allows you to schedule your posts. Pick one day a week to focus on Facebook to promote your business and select item(s). Is tik-tok a hub for your ideal market? You could create some fun videos around what a product does or a collection. Maybe Instagram is your ideal market. Take a picture add a quick short tag line. Make sure you research the best hashtags to use to reach the most people.


What about a window display? Window displays are a great way to market your inventory if you have a brick and mortar location. Can you do a fun window display? What items would you need to make your idea reality. Make a list, write a description, maybe even do a rough drawing of your thoughts. Use your imagination and have fun. If you are having fun, it's likely your customers/guests will too. Window displays always generate attention. Pictures of the window(s) can also be used to promote your business on social media channels. Pick one day to promote product and another day to promote how your business in general using current pictures.


The key is plan it out and stick to it. All social media sites offer analytics or insights to tell you a variety of information. Check to see what time of day most people view your page. Is it random? Or does it correlate with your posts? What posts generate the reactions, comments, and /or shares? Use this information to determine the best plan for your business.
